Solar Power
July 1997
EBA member Malcolm
Moss made a successful
Solar Powered Crossing of the English Channel in S.B. Collinda
and was awarded a special trophy by the EBA to mark his
achievement.
The voyage between Dover and Calais was undertaken under solar power alone
when weather conditions were broken cloud followed by hazy sunshine.
An average speed of 6.3 kph (3.9 mph) was established for the 24.47 mile
crossing in 6hrs 15 minutes

August 2000 Cedric Lynch set a time
for a solar powered boat for the Guinness Book of Records. The official record was
established on the River Arun at Littlehampton over a 50m stretch of river.
The average speed for traveling the measured course in both directions was
5.48 kph and optimum time was achieved with Cedric at the helm and Cllr.
John Richardson as a passenger.

Cedric used a Canadian style canoe to
which two photovoltaic panels were mounted
There were no batteries or any other
source of power in the boat. The craft was designed and constructed by
Cedric Lynch, solar panels were connected via an
electronic speed control unit to a prototype Lynch electric motor coupled
via a reduction gearbox mounted at the stern to a modified two bladed model
aircraft propeller.
June 2003 EBA members Paul and Ulrike Lynn made
the first-ever solar-powered voyage along the entire non-tidal River Thames from
Lechlade to London (124 miles, 43 locks) in their 21ft home-built catamaran
“Solar Flair”. Total cruise time was 37 hours spread over 11 days of travel.

Battery Power
July 1997
- A 24 hour
Endurance Record was set by EBA members Pat and Paul Wagstaffe M.B.E. in their
29ft launch ‘Wagtail V’. Organised by EBA business member Thames Electric
Launch Company, the record was established covering 116 miles in 24 hours
on a single charge over a measured stretch of the River Thames near Goring.
July
2001 -
Richard and Anne
Leeson, EBA members, offered their classic 1899 Andrews river launch ‘Pike’
for an Endurance Record attempt. Conducted in co-operation with the
Guinness Book of Records, the record attempt was carried out over the
same stretch of the Thames used in 1997 but this time the run lasted for 30
hours and covered 137 miles
on a single charge..
